 For Immediate Release

Governor Martinez Scheduled to Speak at

Veterans’ Town Hall Meetings in Hobbs and Carlsbad

 September 13 & 18

(Hobbs VFW Post 3274; Carlsbad American Legion Post 7)

(Hobbs & Carlsbad, NM)— Governor Susana Martinez is scheduled to speak at town hall meetings in Hobbs on September 13 and Carlsbad on September 18 to present details of the state’s new State Veterans’ Cemetery Initiative.

The meetings are presented by the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services (NMDVS). The September 13 meeting in Hobbs begins at 10am at the VFW Post 3274, located at 609 West Alto Drive.  The September 18 meeting in Carlsbad begins at 1pm, at American Legion Post 7, located at 2605 Legion Street.

These are the third and fourth town hall meetings following the announcement by Governor Martinez at a July 16 news conference of a statewide strategic veterans’ cemetery plan to seek federal VA funding for state-supported veterans’ cemeteries in rural areas of the state. Similar meetings to educate and rally support for the plan have been held in Cibolo County and Roswell.

The Governor and NMDVS Secretary Timothy Hale will explain and seek public support of the plan—which calls for the state to commit between $390,000-$640,000 dollars in start-up funds for the development of up to three to four small three-to-five acre veterans’ cemeteries.

The money must be appropriated by The Legislature before the VA will consider full funding of these state veterans’ cemeteries. The start-up funding committed by the state can be recovered by applying for special VA grants for establishing veterans’ cemeteries.

All local veterans, family members, elected officials and members of the public are urged to attend the meeting to gather more information.

The NMDVS will be conducting more town hall meetings in other rural areas of the state in the coming months.

For more information, contact NMDVS Public Information Officer Ray Seva at (505) 827-6352 or ray.seva@state.nm.us.

> This slide show consists of photos taken at a formal dinner at the
> National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, VA. It is a
> beautiful presentation of the honor, commitment and pride today's
> heroes share with the families of their fallen comrades.

> If you know a Marine or a soldier of any branch of the Military (of
> any age) make sure he or she sees this. Wouldn't hurt if all other
> Americans saw it too!
