VFW Post 3274 Commander Eddie Rodriguez presented awards to winners of different competitions.
Jacob Coombes a senior at Hobbs High School was awarded $100.00 and a Voice of Democracy back pack for his winning entry in the essay/video competition sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars National. He was also voted Boy Scout of the year, winning another $100.00. Jacob will be attending Kansas State University. He is the son of Garth and Shawnette Coombes.
Brandon Velasquez was honored as second place winner of Boy Scout of the year with a $50.00 check. Brandon did his Eagle Scout project at the VFW post by cleaning the back storage room, laying blocks for a patio and obtaining and installing a sign on the building showing the name of the post and emblems of the branches of the military. Brandon is the son of Les and Maria Velasquez and is a student at Hobbs High School.
Dalia Rodriguez an 8th grade student at Houston Middle School was presented $100.00 and a Patriot's Pen Back Pack as the winner of the local competition in the VFW Nationally sponsored essay contest. She also won the competition for the State of New Mexico and was presented with $500.00 by the New Mexico VFW. Dalia is the daughter of Adriana Rodriguez.
Teacher of the year was presented $100.00 and a crystal apple plaque. She is Jennifer Redick who teaches third grade at Broadmoor Elementary School.
